Hundreds of protesters gathered at Elizabeth Caruthers Park on January 24th and marched to the Portland ICE facility in solidarity with Minneapolis after the murder of Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents.
Protesters gathered outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Portland, Ore. on January 24th. Federal agents grouped together and secured riot gear behind a large automatic gate as the crowd started chanting. A smaller group of protesters had gathered at the ICE facility earlier in the day, an elderly veteran was pushed to the ground by a Portland Police officer. The man was detained and held in an ambulance for over an hour before the ambulance, with him inside, and the police dispersed. Memorials were built, and candles were lit in remembrance of Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and all those affected by ICE brutality.
As it got dark, more protesters filled the street, and some said they believed more federal agents had arrived to join the ICE agents already putting on riot gear. Shortly after, the first round of tear gas and pepper bullets flew through the gates. The crowd worked together to blow the tear gas back towards the building by waving their signs, and volunteers helped people flush out their eyes. As the night went on, this cycle would happen over and over again.
